Ogunquit - The Maine Department of Transportation is undertaking a $13.5 million dollar project to reconstruct Route 1 in Ogunquit. Due to the heavy tourism economy of the area, road construction will be suspended during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, and again from June 18th through Labor Day, September 5th.
Route 1 is the primary road for Ogunquit, which swells from approximately 3,500 to nearly 35,000 each summer. In an effort to compromise and accommodate the town of Ogunquit, MaineDOT will delay road construction, much of which is focused around the heart of the village, which is receiving a major facelift as part of this project.
?Halting construction during the busiest season will allow residents and visitors to enjoy the summer months without interruption,? noted MaineDOT Project Manager Ernie Martin. ?I encourage residents and visitors to go to MaineDOT.gov to sign up for email alerts or ?like? the Ogunquit Project on Facebook for regular updates.?
Crews have worked hard over the past twelve months, right through the winter. Before leaving on the summer break the contractor will have built two new bridges, completed 6.5 miles of drainage work, totally reconstructed two miles of paved road and installed 2.6 miles of brick and paved sidewalks.
R.J. Grondin & Sons of Gorham is working to finish all the upgrades by December 30, 2016.
