Bridge Closure Will Detour Traffic In Newport

Starting Monday, May 2, Motorists who utilize Main Street in Newport will be detoured off of Main Street due to construction work on the Main Street Bridge which carries Route 2 traffic over the east branch of the Sebasticook River in downtown Newport.

Passenger vehicle traffic will be directed to an in-town detour that utilizes High Street, North Street, and Elm Street.

All truck traffic under 80,000 pounds will be detoured to I-95. Northbound truck traffic can use Exit 161 to access Route 2 east, Route 100 north and Route 7 south. Southbound traffic can use Exit 157 to access Routes 100 south, 2 west, and 7 north.

All Truck Traffic over 80,000 pounds will utilize a detour that includes Route 143 in Etna, Route 222 in Corinna, and Route 7. Northbound trucks over 80,000 pounds coming north on Route 7 into Plymouth will be directed on to Route 69 in Plymouth to Route 220 in Detroit and Route 100 north in Detroit.

All detours are appropriately signed. These detours will be in effect until construction is completed. If construction proceeds as planned, the bridge will reopen before Labor Day (September 5, 2011).

The Maine Street Bridge, which was built in 1930, is being replaced with a new bridge. CPM Constructors of Freeport, Maine is the contractor for this $1.7 million project.
